Summit conclusion - absolute necessity for a global approach

As the Summit 2009 wraps up, the industry looks towards the UNFCCC Copenhagen climate change and how the outcomes of negotiations there might effect our industry. The actions that the industry now needs to make have been layed out in the final Summit Communiqué. Download a copy here. The most interesting thing from my point of view is the need for the industry to ensure a good set of standards for biofuel sustainability as we look to this exciting future. The Summit is over for another year, but the work goes on!

The aviation industry global network is the only platform of activity that is developed sufficiently to afford a complete least cost agriculture to industry value chain for the delivery of a bio fuel from Jatropha Curcas Linn. Currently the opportunity to acquire sufficient feedstock for processing could only be considered along the SE Asian Economic Corridor. Malaysia and Indonesia may have harvest values at strategic locations while much of the African or Indian based agricultural activity has been established without regard for future access to market or refinery technology.

Kilimanjaro Bio Fuels was established to research and develop the opportunity to promote Bio Jet Fuel from Jatropha Curcas Linn as a sustainable resource. The proposed activities include the promotion of a JCL Centre of Excellence and community development/extension of the plant species throughout the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania as a non-competitive fully integrated tree species that would provide oil for process activities. More than 500,000 Ha of community (village and plantation land is available). The economic development zone of the Kilimanjaro International Airport is the most ideal location for process and refinery technology in East Africa.

While KBC was established with Jatropha Curcas Linn as the first feedstock opportunity to be investigated fully the future of Bio Jet Fuel was also considered in terms of Algae. Both Lake Magadi and Lake Natron are considered to have excellent potential as areas with the desirable characteristics required to promote commercial Algae farming and research has been carried out at both locations that suggests that a designed and engineered intervention could lead to considerable oil resources being produced.

Over the past several years a number of tropical and sub tropical locations have been identified as ideal for establishing JCL Centres of Excellence and Bio refinery technologies linked to main or secondary international airport services. Investigations have covered East and Southern Africa, West Africa, India, Se Asia, Indonesia, South America, The Caribbean and several Indian Ocean island states.

We have very little time left to avoid breaching the EU climate change commitment not to exceed a CO2 rise in global mean surface temperature above the pre-industrial level (EC, 2007a).

The directive to include aviation in EU ETS (2008/9) has been welcomed yet benefits will be largely conditional on the proposed baseline and ways in which the wider EU ETS develops, particularly the level of the cap.

To stand a modest chance of not exceeding the +CO2 threshold, the EU has a window of only 10 years or so in which to bring substantial year-on-year reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The aviation industry needs to move to become the prime collaborative partner of the ETS as the industry should view inclusion as an opportunity to take on a lead role at the cutting edge of global Bio Fuel utility.
