UIA and winglets

Ukraine International Airlines is Ukraine’s leading international airline.

Did you know?

  • Winglets are retro-fitted onto airplanes; they are blended into the wing curve out and up from the wingtip.
  • Winglets improve the aerodynamics of an aircraft, reducing fuel consumption and related CO2 emissions.
  • Winglets minimize drag by reducing wingtip vortices that can cause drag and decrease lift.

What are we doing?

  • UIA has announced plans to upgrade its fleet with ‘winglets’ (extended raised wingtips) on its Boeing 737-300 and 737-500 aircrafts.
  • Winglets on two aircrafts were recently installed. A total of five aircraft will be upgraded before the end of 2008.

What are the results?

  • An aircraft with winglets installed will reduce fuel burn by up to 5% and, consequently, reduce CO2 emissions.
  • In addition to increased efficiency, winglets reduce engine maintenance costs and reduce take-off and approach noise levels by 6.5%.
  • “Installation of winglets on our fleet demonstrates our continued commitment to improve efficiency of our aircraft and our continued concern for the environment,” said Richard W. Creagh, Deputy President.
