Rolls-Royce and the Environmentally Friendly Engine

Rolls-Royce and the Environmentally Friendly Engine (EFE) programme

Led by Rolls-Royce, the 'Environmentally Friendly Engine' (EFE) programme is a key element of the National Aerospace Technology Strategy, and involves 11 leading UK organisations from industry and academia.

Did you know?

  • The EFE programme is focusing on developing and validating key technologies to reduce emissions, fuel burn and noise from aircraft, and supports the environmental performance targets set by the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE).

What are we doing?

  • Environmentally Friendly Engines (EFE) is the latest programme to be launched by Rolls-Royce to demonstrate the technologies required to deliver the ACARE goals for 2020. The technology and improved efficiencies which EFE is planned to deliver will lead to reduced fuel consumption, emissions and noise.
  • Rolls-Royce invests more than £700 million every year on Research and Development, two-thirds of which is aimed at improving the environmental performance of its products and operations. Over £120 million of this programme is dedicated to innovative technology aimed at improving environmental performance.

What is the result?

  • The programme will make a major contribution towards achieving the industry targets of 50% lower CO2 emissions, 80% lower NOx emissions and 50% less noise by 2020, all from a 2000 baseline.
  • Experience gained on the EFE programme will be used in many of our next generation gas turbines. New technology may also be considered for retrofit into existing, in-service products to improve environmental performance further.
