KLM and the Worldwide Fund for Nature

KLM and the Worldwide Fund for Nature

KLM is a worldwide company based in the Netherlands. KLM transported almost 23.4 million passengers in the fiscal year 2007-8 and has a modern fleet of 203 aircraft.

Did you know?

  • KLM’s climate care strategy focuses on reducing, controlling, and compensating for CO2 emissions.

What are we doing?

  • KLM has signed an agreement with the Dutch wing of the World Wildlife Fund (Wereld Natuur Fonds – WNF) formally obligating itself to compensate for any increase in CO2 emissions resulting from the company’s growth in air traffic until 2011.
  • The compensation paid is used in support of Gold Standard projects. Based on strict criteria, money is invested in projects devoted to generating sustainable energy – such as solar, wind, water, and biomass – primarily in developing nations.

What is the result?

  • Based on measures at the source, fuel efficiency, and other projects, it has been agreed that KLM will reduce its CO2 emissions by 3% by 2012 and by 17% by 2020. This initiative pre-empts legislation that will take effect in 2012, which is likely to see airlines purchasing emissions rights within the European market.
