KLM and the compensation service CO2ZERO
KLM is a worldwide company based in the Netherlands. KLM transported almost 23.4 million passengers in the fiscal year 2007-8 and has a modern fleet of 203 aircraft.
Did you know?
- KLM is recognized best-in-class in terms of energy-efficient flying. Our track record has convinced WWF (Netherlands) to join forces with KLM to jointly demonstrate that things can be done differently in the airline industry.
- WWF endorses Gold Standard projects for offsetting emissions. This is also KLM’s benchmark.
- Gold Standard focuses on renewable energy projects that have a demonstrated effect on CO2 reduction. It does not include the planting of trees.
What are we doing?
- Besides wide-ranging measures in the field of CO2 reductions, KLM offers customers a service to make their flight CO2 neutral, as a personal, voluntary contribution.
- The service is available on all intercontinental KLM flights, irrelevant of point of origin, point of sales or embarkation point.
- The service is integrated into the booking and online check-in process (www.klm.com) and can also be purchased on board on intercontinental flights.
- 1 Euro from each passenger compensated is 1 Euro directly invested through KLM’s own compensation service. All overhead costs are covered by KLM.
- KLM offers low compensation rates (5.95 Euro per ton/CO2) in comparison to other compensation programmes.
- KLM itself compensates all duty travel of its employees.
- KLM guarantees continuous and complete transparency via open reporting. While WWF is the chosen ‘watchdog’, the renowned accountants KPMG verify the projects financially.
What is the result?
- Example: a return flight Amsterdam-New York is CO2-neutral for 6.50 Euro through CO2ZERO.
