Boeing and the B787 Dreamliner

Boeing & the 787 Dreamliner

Boeing is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of aerospace products, including commercial jetliners. The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner is an all-new, super-efficient commercial airplane, entering service in 2008.

Did you know?

  • An airplane takes off when upward lift exceeds the downward pull of gravity, and forward thrust exceeds the drag caused by air resistance. Generating sufficient thrust and lift requires a lot of energy.
  • An airplane’s fuel consumption (and therefore the amount of CO2 emitted) can be reduced by:
    • Minimizing the pull of gravity by reducing the weight of a plane.
    • Minimizing drag by making the plane more aerodynamic.

What are we doing?

  • Boeing is using composite material to build the 787. This composite is lighter and stronger than traditional materials.
  • Boeing has designed the 787’s nose, wings, and tail to minimize drag and maximize lift.

What is the result?

  • The 787 will use 20% less fuel per passenger than airplanes in the sky today.
  • The 787 will have a noise footprint that is 60% smaller than competing airplanes – this means all of the loudest noise produced by the airplane stays within airport boundaries and doesn’t impact local neighborhoods.
  • This, along with our efforts in other areas, is helping to limit our contribution to climate change.
