Auckland Airport and staff travel
Auckland International Airport is New Zealand’s largest and busiest airport, with around 12 million passengers a year. Around 70% of all international visitors to New Zealand arrive at Auckland Airport.
Did you know?
-
Each day, over 80,000 vehicles travel to and from Auckland Airport.
-
With the growth in passengers and staff at Auckland Airport, it is expected that this demand will increase around 90% by 2015, placing capacity pressure on the roads to and within the airport precinct.
What are we doing?
-
In February 2007, Auckland Airport launched a staff travel plan, called lift, which aims to significantly reduce surface transport emissions at the airport.
-
Using competitions, incentives and creative thinking, the lift campaign’s aim is to firstly encourage staff to “think about getting to work differently”, and provide practical travel solutions. Initially, two projects are being pursued:
-
Carpooling – whereby two or more people share a car journey to/from work. Carpoolers can be matched informally by word of mouth, text messaging, or database.
-
Improved bus service for airport staff, in coordination with the regional council.
What is the result?
