Fraport AG and hydrogen-powered vehicles

Fraport AG and hydrogen-powered vehicles

Fraport AG is the owner and operator of Frankfurt International Airport (FRA).

Did you know?

  • In 1839, British physicist Sir William Grove discovered that combining hydrogen and oxygen will produce two outputs; an electric current and water. Modern fuel cells rely on the same concept.
  • Fuel cells are emission-free and quieter than hydrocarbon fuel-powered engines. Their only waste product is pure water.
  • Hydrogen exists in abundance; in fact, it is the most common element on Earth.

What are we doing?

  • Fraport is conducting a field trial of hydrogen-powered vehicles in a real operational environment. Fraport is currently using two such vehicles and plans to expand to five by 2008.
  • A nearby factory, which generates hydrogen as a byproduct, provides the fuel for Fraport’s hydrogen-powered vehicles.

What is the result?

  • The trial will demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are ready for everyday use — even the strenuous demands of airport ground operations.
  • This, along with our efforts in other areas, is helping to limit our contribution to climate change.
